Family Economic Empowerment Support (FEES) for Women in Uganda

About

Location: Kampala City, Uganda
Key(s): Economic Empowerment

In Kampala City, Uganda, women and girls have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 in a number of ways, including increased domestic violence, violation of their rights, difficulty accessing health services, difficulty obtaining capital and credit for their small businesses and other basic services. To address the pandemic’s effects on women’s economic situations, Rockflower has partnered with Dare Now Uganda to help women and girls recover emotionally and economically and to mitigate the disastrous effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Family Economic Empowerment Support (FEES) for Women in Uganda will work to provide micro-capital ($28 USD or 100,000 USh each) to women operating small businesses in order to allow them to get back on their feet as they recover from the pandemic. The women in Kampala City generally own small, informal businesses which allow them to afford to rent small rooms for their families. Many of the women are facing homelessness or feel insecure about their ability to continue to pay rent due to the economic damage caused by the pandemic.

Robertson Hagggai, founder of Dare Now Uganda told us, “Before we met and mobilized the women, one constant issue for most of them was precarious day to day type of survival and when speaking of the future, it was difficult for these women to see past the immediate future or to see past a life in the slums. Much of their energy was focused on day to day survival.”

Dare Now Uganda aims to not only economically impact women on a small scale, but to provide emotional support, training and education that will allow them to envision and create  a better future for themselves and their families.
