The Tailoring Their Futures project is an ongoing skills and entrepreneurial empowerment program created by Rwenzori United Group for Life Improvement (RUGLI) with the mission of training women in clothing alteration and sewing as well as providing the necessary knowledge and capital to own and operate their own small tailoring businesses.
This project will allow women and girls who previously lacked or struggled with obtaining a source of income to have a means of providing for themselves and their families. Additionally, tailoring in this region has generally been a male dominated industry, and by providing women with the knowledge and skills to enter this space, RUGLI will be working to break down barriers in this profession.
Since the inception of the project, the mission has evolved further as the women have taken the initiative to learn how to sew masks to help protect themselves and their communities from the COVID-19 pandemic. To date, RUGLI has put together a dedicated space, and allocated resources to operate this mask sewing project.
Overall, this initiative is one that will allow women who were previously without a source of stable income, to gain knowledge and skills that will allow them to sustain themselves whilst maintaining independence for a lifetime.

Stories of Impact:
“Jolly, after receiving help to start a business by RUGLI and Rockflower, has gradually developed both her skills and business as her capital and stock have increased. The more active she is in her business the more skills she gains making the fashions customers want. Sometimes the customers bring her designs and she copies them to make her bestselling clothes. Because of her business she can now afford to smile and she can get whatever she wants — she has purchasing power.”
