One Africa Research Development and Extension Programme (OARDEP) is an NGO based in Likpe Bala in the Jasikan District of the newly created region of  Ghana. It was founded in 2006 with the mission of promoting sustainable development  initiatives in education, health, community development, and healthy ecosystems.

They focus on working with small-scale farmers and small business owners through participatory and innovative practices to support them in creating self-sustained growth. OARDEP aims to build communities’ capacity to secure their own food, nutrition and income at a household level to alleviate poverty and improve the livelihood of vulnerable and the disadvantaged people in society.

In the Jasikan District almost 87% of the population practices subsistence farming and the majority of the people are living in poverty. 100% of farmers rely on rainfall to sustain their farms and recently, rainfall has been erratic and farmers are struggling to yield enough crops.

In partnership with Rockflower, OARDEP will work to create a model organic rice farm and education center. The farm will serve a number of goals including bringing awareness to farmers on the dangers of using chemicals, reclaim farmland affected by those chemicals, model innovative methods for increasing crop yield, provide managerial training to women farmers, and prepare farmers for climate change.

Participants will learn about rainwater harvesting and irrigation management, entrepreneurial skills, new techniques in farming, how to keep proper records for pricing and basic market skills. The model farm will be a hub for farmers to gain education, find community and create their own resilient and profitable farms.
