Rwenzori Women's Initiative for Community Development
About
Location: Kasese, Uganda
Key(s): Economic Empowerment
Rwenzori Women’s Initiative for Community Development (RWICOD) was started in October 2002 by a group of women who saw a need for women to join hands to fight the injustices of poverty, disease and violence.
Today, the organization has 20 members of whom 18 are women and 2 are men. Our programs focus on the whole Rwenzori area, a region covering the western Ugandan districts of Kasese, Kabarole and Bundibugyo. Collectively, these three districts have a population of slightly over 1.6 million people. For the moment, most of our programs are still local in scope, covering small parts of the region due to financial constraints. Some past programs, for example, the Lhuyira-English bilingual dictionary project have covered the whole region.
